This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

| Jet-skiiers are reminded - life jackets are lifesavers, and not just for boaters. |

The recent warm summer weather in much of Ohio has prompted some Ohioans to take their jet skis to their nearest lake. Ohio watercraft officials say it's important that people remember that state law mandates anyone who operates a jet ski is required to wear a life jacket. Watercraft spokesman John Wisse says even people who consider themselves strong swimmers can run into trouble if they forgo a life jacket while riding on a jet ski.
There were 14 personal watercraft accidents that caused injuries last year in Ohio. But failing to follow the rules can cause death. Wisse points to the death of a professional football player in May in Louisiana. Twenty-four-year-old defensive end Marquise Hill was killed after falling off a jet ski and suffering a concussion. He was violating Louisiana law by not wearing a safety vest. |
