The Minneapolis bridge collapse has been a reminder in many communities with bridges that such a disaster can happen close to home. And it did happen, in the town of Kanauga, Ohio, 40 years ago. The Silver Bridge fell into the Ohio River in 1967, killing 46 people. Shelly Horvath of Athens was 17 the day the bridge collapsed. She talked with Cheri Russo of member station WOUB in Athens.
The Silver Bridge disaster was so shocking, it brought major reforms to the process of maintaining and inspecting bridges across the country. |
