The Ohio Senate has okayed a House-passed measure that's supposed to strengthen the power of auditors who monitor government agencies to make sure money is spent properly. Senator Gary Cates says this new kind of oversight could have prevented the kind of scandal that erupted at the Bureau of Workers Compensation, the scandal known as Coingate.
In the Coingate scandal, an auditor within the B.W.C. had warned there was the possibility of misspending, but his warning was ignored by higher-ups within the agency. Under the proposed new auditing method, internal auditors would send their reports to a separate agency -- the Office of Budget and Management. |
