This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

The Ohio Senate has passed a bill that increases penalties for people who use the internet to try to have sex with children. It imposes a mandatory minimum sentence of one year for someone convicted of importuning a child who is thirteen years old or younger. For older children, a six month minimum sentenced would be imposed. Repeat offenders would face even more jail time. Sen. Tim Schafer says the stiffer penalties are needed.
Schaffer says lawmakers saw first hand the need for the bill recently at the Ohio Statehouse when an arrest as a result of an investigation took place while testimony was being heard on the bill. The legislation now goes to the Ohio house. |
