This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

An Ohio lawmaker is proposing a ban on strikes by teachers. Republican State Senator John Carey says the work stoppages rob taxpayers and students alike.
Belinda Dixon, the president of a local teachers union in Carey's appalachian district, is endorsing his proposed ban on strikes, but the statewide group she's a member of -- the Ohio Education Association -- is against the idea. Rachelle Johnson is the OEA's top lawyer. She says without the right to strike, teachers would lose a big bargaining chip.
Under the proposal to ban teacher strikes, school labor disputes would be solved instead by binding arbitration. That's the same mechanism used in disputes involving police and fire personnel. |
