There are a million veterans in Ohio - that's 8% of the state's population and puts Ohio at sixth in the nation in the number of veterans among state residents. But Ohio veterans have battled to get benefits - the state is ranked way down the list in linking vet to benefits such as disability compensation. Gov. Ted Strickland says that's why he proposed creating a cabinet level Department of Veterans Services. |

| Strickland has just appointed former state representative Bill Hartnett of Mansfield, a veteran of the US Navy and the Korean War, as the director of the department. Harnett will be the 23rd member of the governor's cabinet starting on August 21, when the law creating the new agency takes effect. |
