Watch This Week's "The State of Ohio" Online
Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Ohio University researchers develop program to increase exercise and lower diabetes numbers.
By Fred Kight - July 7, 2008
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced last week that the number of people with diabetes increased 15% from 2005 to 2007. The problem is even more pronounced in Appalachian Ohio, where the percentage of the population who suffer from diabetes is higher than the national average. In an effort to help, Ohio University researchers have created Program ACTIVE. Dr. Jay Shubrook of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine says that stands for "Appalachians Coming Together to Increase Vital Exercise".

Diabetes is found in 11% of residents in the Appalachian region of Ohio, compared to eight percent elsewhere in the U-S.

According to an OU study, about 40% of hospital admissions in Appalachian Ohio in the last twelve months were for conditions complicated by diabetes. That's almost twice the national average.
