Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

High gas prices have driven many Ohioans to consider getting behind the wheel less often.
By Bill Cohen - July 28, 2008
A federal study shows that high gasoline prices are prompting Americans to drive a little less. That's also happening in Ohio, and that means the state government is no longer raking in its usual increase in gasoline tax revenue that's used for highway and bridge construction and repairs. Ohio Public Radio's Bill Cohen talked about the dilemma with a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Transportation, Scott Varner.

Varner notes that the state gasoline tax in Ohio is $.28 a gallon, and that does not fluctuate with the price of fuel. The federal gas tax is 18.4 cents a gallon.
