Ohio's sinking economy and lagging tax revenues have already prompted Gov. Ted Strickland to trim state government spending by more than one and a quarter billion dollars, and now the governor is worrying that the situation may get even worse. Recently-announced layoffs of thousands of Ohio workers are one reason for his pessimism. The governor talked about that with statehouse reporters, including Ohio Public Radio's Bill Cohen.
There is a third option besides more spending cuts or a tax increase. Ohio legislators and the governor could dip into Ohio's rainy day fund. It currently holds about a one billion dollars. |
