Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Ohio's budget situation isn't getting better, and governor is mulling how to handle it.
By Bill Cohen - November 11, 2008
Ohio's sinking economy and lagging tax revenues have already prompted Gov. Ted Strickland to trim state government spending by more than one and a quarter billion dollars, and now the governor is worrying that the situation may get even worse. Recently-announced layoffs of thousands of Ohio workers are one reason for his pessimism. The governor talked about that with statehouse reporters, including Ohio Public Radio's Bill Cohen.

There is a third option besides more spending cuts or a tax increase. Ohio legislators and the governor could dip into Ohio's rainy day fund. It currently holds about a one billion dollars.
