Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Midwives pushing for bill that would deliver more standards and more credibility.
By Karen Kasler - May 12, 2009
As many as a hundred babies are born in Ohio each month at home with the help of midwives, according to a group that is pushing for legislation to create legal standards for the profession. Ohio Families for Safe Birth says certified professional midwives deserve some sort of state license to give them credibility. Beck-Borden says there are only about 20 certified professional midwives in Ohio right now, but more are needed, especially in rural areas where hospitals are more than an hour away. And she says as long as the mother is safe and informed, home birth doesn't carry risks beyond those in hospitals.
