Six of Ohio's nine "early college" high schools are reporting a lot of success in graduating students with some college credits already on their resumes. The schools are located in big cities, and they target students who might not be expected to perform scholastically well enough to get into college. Lisa Duty works with the KnowledgeWorks Foundation, which supports these kinds of innovative schools.

| That's a tipping point, Duty says, that usually points to success in college. She says -- even though the students in this program often start out with disadvantages --- coming from poor backgrounds, and reading two years below grade level -- they succeed in the college-bound curriculum because of high expectations, plus a lot of mentoring and tutoring |
