It took almost all summer, but Ohio has its first case of West Nile virus.
By Jo Ingles - August 27, 2009
Ohio's Department of Health reports an 11-year-old boy from the Cleveland area is the first to be diagnosed with a case of West Nile virus this summer. In an interview with Ohio Public Radio's Jo Ingles, the agency's Kristopher Weiss says the department is also seeing a spike in the number of west nile positive mosquitoes.

Weiss advises Ohioans to get rid of containers that hold standing water, make sure the gutters on homes are draining properly and wear light colored , long sleeved clothing. Weiss says it appears the west nile virus is hitting Ohio a little later than usual this year. The number of cases for this year will likely be down from 441 in 2002. Weiss says mosquitoes will likely continue to be an issue now until the first hard frost in Ohio.
