Watch This Week's "The State of Ohio" Online
Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

More interest than ever being shown by parents who are eligible for state-paid vouchers.
By Bill Cohen - February 5, 2010
Free tuition or almost free tuition for your children at a private school of your choice. That's the deal that the state of Ohio is offering once again to parents whose children are now in a poorly-performing public school. The program is called Ed Choice. The window for applying for a grant for next school year has just opened up. Ohio Public Radio's Bill Cohen talked about how it works with Chad Aldis, the head of the main group backing the program --- School Choice Ohio.

The private school vouchers he's talking about range from about $4,000 to $5,000. The deadline for applying for the vouchers is April 16th. Once parents have chosen a private school for their child, the school helps them file the voucher application. This year, the state has reserved about $50 million to pay for the program.
