State Fair officials point to a concert cancellation and the weather as reasons for slightly lower attendance this year. Spokesperson Christina Leeds says 812,000 people went through the gates during the 12-day event that ended Sunday, down from the 826,000 who attended last year's fair. Leeds says this year's numbers likely would have run even with last year's if Disney teen star Selena Gomez had not dropped off the fair's concert calendar at the last minute because of strained vocal cords. In 2003, the fair scaled back the length of the event by five days - and leeds says there are no plans to extend it. Next year's state fair runs July 27 through August 7. |
