Democratic Senator proposes adding new category to those covered in Ohio's hate crimes law.
By Bill Cohen - April 11, 2011
A state senator wants to expand Ohio’s hate crimes law. The law currently says people who threaten or attack others because of their race, religion, or ethnicity can expect tougher punishment. Democratic State Sen. Eric Kearney is proposing adding “disability” to the list. He says threats and violence against the disabled are indeed a problem, and he talks about that with statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen.

Whether Kearney's proposal will move in the legislature isn’t clear. Kearney is a Democrat, and Republicans dominate the Ohio Senate and House.
