Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Neighbors who try to keep up abandoned homes would be protected under new bill.
By Bill Cohen - January 16, 2012
Dilapidated and abandoned houses drag down property values in surrounding homes. That’s why some community groups encourage neighbors to fix up the abandoned properties. Now, those groups may be getting some help from Ohio legislators. They’re considering a bill that would give neighbors some legal protection, when they go onto abandoned properties to beautify them. Youngstown state senator Joe Schiavoni is the author of the measure, and he talked about it with statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen.

Schiavoni says the farm bureau and county prosecutors have suggested some minor adjustments to his bill…but no outright opponents have surfaced, and the measure has had several legislative committee hearings.
