Consumer watchdog warns of new scam preying on people considering switching electric service.
By Bill Cohen - June 12, 2012
If someone tells you they’ll get you financial help paying your utility bills if you’ll hand over your social security number, don’t do it. That’s the warning from the consumer advocacy agency that represents Ohio’s residential utility customers. Bruce Weston heads the Consumer Counsel’s Office, and he says it’s a scam, designed to give con-artists an opening to steal people’s identities or cash.

Weston says this scam has already been reported in others states, and he wants to make sure no one falls for it, if it comes to Ohio.
