Education Study Results In Mixed News For Ohio.
By Jo Ingles - January 9, 2003
A national report by Education Week magazine has good and bad news for Ohio. The study ranked Ohio among the best states when it compared the quality standards for teachers. State education officials say that’s because Ohio has a teacher testing program, financial support for teachers who earn national certifications, and help for new first year teachers. But the report didn’t spell good news for Ohio in other areas. It criticizes the state for not doing enough to attract and keep good quality teachers in high minority and low achieving schools. In an interview with Ohio Public Radio’s Jo Ingles, the education department’s Marilyn Braatz explains why Ohio fared so poorly in these areas of the study.

The state education department says it has a couple of targeted programs to help professionals in other fields become teachers. One provides money for people leaving the military to make that switch. Another provides dollars to school districts and colleges to help professionals move into teaching careers, putting a special focus on helping minorities make that switch.
