Outbreak of Diarrhea Causing Disease in Cincinnati Area.
By Jo Ingles - August 15, 2001
About 1,200 people in the Cincinnati area are being plagued by a disease known as shigellosis. Health officials are targeting education efforts to day care centers and other areas where the illness might be easily spread. Doctors with the Ohio Department of Health have been in Cincinnati studying the outbreak. In an interview with Ohio Public Radio's Jo Ingles, the health department's Dr. Mary DiOrio of the Ohio Department of Health explains this outbreak is serious. She says there are also some cases of the disease in northern Kentucky but she doesn't track numbers for those areas. DiOrio says her office will continue to keep a close watch on the spread of the illness.
