Taft Says No Clemency for Byrd.
By Bill Cohen - September 10, 2001
Governor Bob Taft says he won't grant clemency to convicted murder John Byrd. That means: unless an eleventh hour court ruling spares his life, Byrd will be executed Wednesday morning at 10.

While critics of the death penalty say questions linger as to whether Byrd really did the stabbing he's been convicted of, Taft points out that at 23 stages of appeals, his conviction and death sentence have been affirmed. In Taft's words, "I can find no reasonable or compelling reason to disagree with these very thorough evaluations of Mr. Byrd's case."

Byrd's execution has also stirred controversy because of his choice of an execution method - he's picked the electric chair over lethal injection. Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen gives us one last look at the Byrd case.
