| Environmentalist Reaction To Shregardus Decision. |

Environmentalists say they are breathing a sigh of relief now that Former Ohio EPA chief Don Schregardus has pulled himself out of the running to be the top enforcer for the federal EPA.
Jack Shaner of the Ohio Environmental Council is one of the critics who charged Schregardus failed to enforce clean air and water laws while running the Ohio EPA - a claim supported by a report from the federal agency earlier this month. |

| Schregardus served under then governor and now US Senator George Voinovich, who says the Bush administration did not push the nomination hard enough, and thinks Schregardus would not have received a fair hearing in the Senate. Two democratic Senators had put a hold on the nomination. Shaner is hoping for a more environmentally friendly nominee. |

| Schregardus says he was honored by the nomination and is disappointed he won't be able to serve. The White House had praised Schregardus' record, saying he implemented air pollution and control programs that enabled all 88 Ohio counties to achieve national air quality standards for the first time. |
