Advocates for Poor Say Giving is Down Because of September 11.
November 8, 2001
Advocates for the poor are saying unprecedented donations to September 11th relief funds mean many people don't have the money to donate to other charities. The impact? Agencies will face a difficult winter, trying to help people newly unemployed or underemployed as a result of the sagging economy. Lisa Hamler Podolski - director of the Ohio association of Second Harvest Foodbanks says sometmes it feels like there's a funding torpedo that will hit human services agencies this winter.

Podolski insists, this is the first time Ohio has entered a recession without a safety net for the poorest of the poor. In fact, advocates say more than 13,000 Ohioans are about to fall through the cracks - because they've run out of welfare and unemployment benefits - and will likely be the first to be laid off if the economy becomes worse.
