Treasurer likes governor's appointment, defends aides who pleaded to charges.
By Karen Kasler - December 21, 2004
The current state treasurer leaves office in a cloud of controversy. Investigators say contributors to Joe Deters’ campaign, including jailed Cleveland broker Frank Gruttadauria, got preferential treatment. Two aides and a lobbyist pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges in Cleveland, but Deters says he doesn’t think they did anything wrong. Deters leaves in January after winning a write-in campaign for Hamilton County Prosecutor. Deters says he was asked to run because of a scandal involving an extramarital affair between current prosecutor Mike Allen and a staff attorney, which Deters says was hurting the President’s re-election campaign. Deters says Lt. Gov. Jeannette Bradley is a good choice to take over his office.
