Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": The budget is on its way to a committee that will hammer out the differences before the end of the month deadline. But there are serious issues on both sides that could slow down the talks. A billion dollars is headed back to Ohio employers who paid into the state’s Bureau of Workers' Comp program. But a critic says the BWC has an outstanding bill that remains unpaid. And more on how Ohio's poorest people are surviving the rising costs of a basic existence.

Bill to exempt military personnel out of Ohio from state income tax folded into "snowbird" bill.
By Karen Kasler - February 9, 2006
Some Ohioans outside of the state may soon be exempted from state income tax – whether they live somewhere else by choice or whether they’re serving in the military. A bill that would exempt Ohioans on active military duty elsewhere from paying income tax was folded into a bill that gives tax breaks to people and companies that locate outside of Ohio for as long as six months a year. Supporters of what’s been called the “snowbird” bill said states with better tax breaks were costing Ohio millions in lost tax revenues, and that Ohio needed to extend its residency standard from four months to six months.
Rep. Peter Ujvagi (D-Toledo)sponsored the military exemption bill. The taxation department estimates Ujvagi’s bill could cost the state $22 million. Ujvagi says the figure he’s worked out is between three and five million dollars.
