Order Online : "The State of Ohio"
This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

Senator introduces gas tax cut for police and fire departments.
By Jo Ingles - August 9, 2006
A bill is being introduced in the Ohio legislature that’s intended to save millions of dollars for local fire and police departments throughout Ohio. State Senator and Attorney General candidate Marc Dann (D-Youngstown) is pushing a proposal that would allow local law enforcement and fire departments to get a refund of $.26 2/3 for each gallon of gasoline those agencies use. Ross County Sheriff Ron Nichols says the relief is sorely needed.

Dann says local safety departments throughout the state have been forced to lay off people because their budgets are so tight. Dann says the measure would be temporary and could be lifted if gas prices go down considerably. The Ohio Department of Transportation could lose up to $10 million, but Dann believes that loss could be easily absorbed by the agency.
