This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. | Taft cautiously considering the option to go ahead and stop "red light cameras" bill. |

Governor Bob Taft says he hasn't decided if he'll veto the bill that puts the brakes on red-light camera programs in several Ohio cities. But he says he's thinking about it, and may indeed veto it, as he did with the bill that overturned weapons bans in some 80 communities. In a year-end interview with Ohio Public Radio, Taft said he thinks lawmakers has gone too far in some matters involving local control over legislation.
Taft says he agrees with advocates for cities that the concept of "home rule" is under attack. Last week, Taft vetoed the changes in Ohio's concealed-carry weapons law, a bill which overturned local bans on weapons in some 80 communities, including a ban on assault weapons in Columbus. Lawmakers overrode that action, which was the first time in 29 years that the Ohio legislature had successfully overruled a veto. |
