2006 is ending with Ohio's prison population continuing to rise. In fact, it's getting close to the all-time record high that was set eight years ago. The latest weekly count shows about 48,500 inmates in state-run lock-ups. That's a big increase over the number just a couple of years ago, according to state corrections director Terry Collins. He talked about the situation with statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen.
Collins hints he may ask for more money for halfway houses and other prison alternatives, when state legislators hammer out a new two-year state budget in the spring. Collins notes that state prisons now hold about 29% more inmates than they were designed to hold. |
