It was 204 years ago today that the Ohio Legislature held its first meeting. History buffs are marking the day with a meeting at the statehouse, and one of the stars is the original Ohio Constitution, which was written in 1802. It's the first time in about a decade that the well-worn papers have been on public display. Pari Swift, the assistant state archivist, tells statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen - the document is too fragile to be subjected to a lot of handling and a lot of light.
The original Ohio Constitution was approved by about three dozen delegates who met in Chillicothe in 1802. The next year, Ohio officially became the 17th state in the union. |
