"How can I apply for food stamps?" "Where are some affordable nearby nursing homes?" "Does my family qualify for a discount on utility bills?" For answers to those kinds of questions, some Ohioans have been able to call a special short phone number: 2-1-1. Experts on social welfare programs are on hand to steer callers in the right direction. now, advocates for the poor and elderly are calling on state government to make sure that everyone in Ohio has access to the 2-1-1 system. Samanatha Hurd works with Ohio United Way. In an interview with statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen, Hurd says there's a lot of information out there, and it should be available to more Ohioans.
Hurd says Congress is now considering a bill that would help states pay for their 2-1-1 systems...so if Ohio eventually enlarges its system statewide, more federal dollars could be headed here. |
