This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

More than 1.2 million Ohioans are uninsured. Politicians, health groups and other advocates have offered their thoughts on changing that. Now doctors are weighing in, saying any plan that state lawmakers examine needs to include access to healthcare for everyone. Craig Anderson is a neo-natalogist in Columbus and the president of the Ohio State Medical Association. He says the system is under pressure from rising insurance costs and increasing numbers of immigrants, unemployed workers and other uninsured people seeking health care. Anderson says everyone needs to be covered for the system to work.
The doctors also say a universal health care plan should have a dedicated funding source, should emphasize wellness instead of treatment for illness, and should allow patients to make choices. And they say the plan also should have an element of personal responsibility - which could include extra costs for patients who are overweight, smoke or drink. |
