Ohio is one of 20 states where legislation has been introduced to ask Congress to repeal the Real ID act. And civil rights activists who've opposed it say that's one of many signs that the proposal to require a national identification card is nearly dead. Carrie Davis is with the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, and says Real ID would be cumbersome and costly.
The ACLU has opposed Real ID on privacy grounds. Homeland Security secretary Michael Chertoff has said Real ID is catching on in the states, but his department has now extended the deadline for the second time in a year. The deadline for states to comply with Real ID now moves from 2013 to 2018. Ohio officials had said it could cost $45 million to implement Real ID, with $15 million in new costs each year. |
