An estimated 500 people turned out at a meeting in Youngstown Wednesday to hear from the state Department of Natural Resources about recent earthquakes near an injection well. Injection wells hold wastewater from oil and natural gas drilling, but the state has shut down five wells in northeast Ohio after 11 earthquakes in the last year. Rick Simmers is the head of the oil and gas division of the Department of Natural Resources, and he says those who attended the meeting are concerned about whether there’s a connection between the wells and the tremors. |

| A seismologist at the meeting says his research shows there is a connection, but the state says that hasn’t been proven. While some residents have called for a stop to all injection well operations and to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, state officials have said that’s not practical and would be devastating to the oil and gas drilling industry. You can hear more of this interview this weekend on “The State of Ohio” on PBS stations around the state or at the link at the left. |
