Advocates of addiction treatment programs have won a partial victory at the Ohio Statehouse. Key lawmakers have agreed to set aside money from expanded gambling at race tracks….and use it for anti-addiction programs. An earlier proposed set of rules for the 17,500 slot machines that are soon to be installed at Ohio’s seven tracks included no money for addiction treatment. Minority Democrats pushed for a 2% set-aside, to match the proportion that Ohio’s full-scale gambling casinos will soon pay. Majority Republicans are now agreeing to a 1% set-aside for the slots-at-the-tracks. GOP Rep. Lou Blessing talks about the compromise with statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen. |
