Order Online : "The State of Ohio"

Kasich says he’s glad Senators pulled back pilot program to drug test welfare recipients.
By Karen Kasler - May 17, 2012
Gov. John Kasich is pleased that a pilot program to allow drug testing for certain welfare recipients wasn’t tucked into his budget update that passed the Senate this week. Senate Republicans had said they feel there’s evidence that too many recipients are spending that money on drugs, so they proposed a pilot program in three counties allowing officials to drug-test applicants for certain welfare benefits. Kasich says while he’s concerned about state funds going to drug use, he wants to consider the idea more carefully, because he sees both sides of the issue.

The pilot program will now be considered in a separate bill.
