This week on "The State of Ohio": State lawmakers consider what they can do in the wake of the horrible and yet miraculous escape story out of Cleveland involving three women held prisoner in a house for a decade. New data shows more than half of all violent crimes are committed by a very small numbers of offenders. Lawmakers are now working to target that tiny group. And more thoughts on legislation that would dramatically change rules on unions in Ohio.

| Senate OK's Greenspace/Brownfields Plan. |

A plan to have Ohio borrow $400 million to preserve greenspace and to cleanup
polluted industrial sites is close to final passage in the legislature. On a vote
of 30-2, the Ohio Senate has just okayed a House-approved proposal to help cities
buy land for parks and nature preserves and to help them restore abandoned polluted
areas called brownfields. Earlier, environmental groups had complained the proposal
allowed private companies to decide whether a cleanup was complete but now, that
job will be done by the Ohio EPA and that satisfies activists like Jack Shaner.
Governor Taft is expected to sign the greenspace/brownfields bill into law. He
campaigned for it last year when he asked Ohio voters to give the green-light
to the environmental package. |
