Fire can spread quickly in forests. That's one of the reasons Wayne National Forest officials are planning several controlled fires in Athens and Hocking counties. Forest engineer Steve Marchi says the so-called "prescribed fire" project would get rid of flammable ground materials that can spread fire. |

| Marchi says the fires would improve the forest ecosystem as well. But at least one environmental group, the Buckeye Forest council, is not so sure. Council spokesman Joe Hazelbaker says there could be more harm than good. |
