Ohio's Up-and-Down Prison Population Levels Off.
By Bill Cohen - July 3, 2001
Ohio's up-and-down prison population has finally leveled off. For 25 years,
beginning in the early 1970's the number of inmates in Ohio prisons mushroomed
by about 700 percent. Then, in 1998, it started dropping. Now, corrections department
spokesman Joe Andrews tells Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen that the prison
population is fairly stable. Ohio corrections department spokesman Joe Andrews
says before the prison-building boom of the 1980's, Ohio had only 12 lockups.
Now, the state has 34.
