An experiment to inject carbon dioxide deep into the earth now has a home in Ohio. The site is a coal-fired power plant along the Ohio River just south of Wheeling, West Virginia. And the goal of the experiment is to store the waste product of electricity production that’s been blamed by many scientists for global warming. The power plant, chosen as the site by the U.S. Department of Energy, is owned by FirstEnergy. Mark Durbin speaks for the utility company, and he talked about the experiment with Ohio Public Radio’s Bill Cohen.
The Ohio experiment, injecting carbon dioxide into the earth, has a price tag of about $18 million. The federal government has promised to pay the biggest chunk – more than $14 million. |
