| Health department sifting through thousands of compliments and complaints on new smoking ban. |

The department of health has taken in four thousand comments about the state's new smoking ban, with concerns about the size of fines and the placement of signs, as well as which agency will enforce the ban and how people can report violators. Two Republican state lawmakers are among those who've sent letters. Sen. Tim Grendell of northeast Ohio and Rep. Bill Seitz of Cincinnati are concerned about the anonymous reporting process and the fine structure, and wrote -quoting here - "Joseph Stalin would be proud to have utilized such a system." Kristopher Weiss with the Department of Health says the way complaints are reported is out of his agency's control.
Weiss says the law that created the smoking ban says enforcement rules must be in place by June 7, but he's hoping they'll be ready by the spring. But in the meantime, Weiss says, the smoking ban is still in effect. |
