Proposal To Keep Teens In Foster Care System Longer Moves To Senate

The proposal to change the state’s foster care age out from 18 to 21 took another step closer to reality. Lawmakers believe the change could cut down on several problems.

The statistics are grim for teens Ohio’s foster care system when they turn 18. Lawmakers cited high percentages of homelessness, incarceration and unemployment.

Republican Representative Cheryl Grossman is from Grove City south of Columbus.

“Just like all kids, teenagers in foster care deserve continued support access to positive education and work experiences and the opportunity to make decisions about their own lives," said Grossman.

The measure includes no extra spending but directs the department of job and family services to include the funding in the next biennium budget.

The bill passed the House and now moves to the Senate.
