Mayor Of Historic Democratic Town In Republican County Speaks to DNC

Karen Kasler
Chillicothe Mayor Luke Feeney smiles after his speech to the DNC Monday.

One of the speakers on the stage on the first night of the Democratic National Convention was the mayor of Ohio’s historic first state capitol – a town that votes Democratic in a very Republican county.

“Hello, delegates! Hello, Ohio!”

Chillicothe mayor Luke Feeney greeted the arena to cheers, especially from the Ohio delegation. Feeney got the invitation to speak at the DNC just two weeks before the convention. His town votes Democratic, but Ross County has voted for a Democrat only one time in the last ten presidential contests. But Feeney says since the economy is getting better, he thinks this time might be different. “Hillary's got a plan, and that's what we're talking about. There's no plan on the other side. And I think we've got smart voters in Ross County and they're excited about what Hillary can do for our country and for our town."

The last time Ross County voted for a Democrat for president was 1996 – when Bill Clinton was re-elected to the White House.
