A central Ohio woman was honored for the time she spends as a caregiver for her mother. She says she has an important message for Ohioans.

In honor of National Family Caregivers Month, AARP picked a family caregiver in every state to recognize. Veronica Scott of the Columbus area was the choice for Ohio.

She started taking care of her mother last year and Scott’s employer even let her start working from home.

“It is something -- it gives me joy because I’m able to help her, she’s there, I don’t have to worry about her being somewhere she doesn’t want to be. So she’s happy -- that makes me happy,” said Scott.

Scott calls on all Ohioans to give back to their older family members in whatever way they can.

More than 1.7 million Ohioans are caregivers. According to the AARP, their unpaid dedication is valued at more than $16.5 million.
