Ohio House Approves Resolution Urging Halt To Syrian Refugee Resettlement

Karen Kasler

Lawmakers in the Ohio House approved a resolution urging President Obama to stop the resettlement of Syrian refugees in the US.

Republican Rep. Tim Derickson (R-Oxford), who’s running for the southwest Ohio seat recently vacated by US House Speaker John Boehner, sponsored the resolution. “This resolution really is about screening, security screenings," Derickson said. "It’s not about not welcoming immigrants.”

It generated more than an hour of passionate party line debate, including this from House Minority Leader Fred Strahorn (D-Dayton). “Somebody said they want to get rid of our society as we know it. When you stop living up to your principles, guess what? They just did that.”

The resolution expresses an opinion of the legislature and has no force of law.
