Volunteers Set Up 9/11 Memorial On Statehouse Lawn

Dan Konik

Nearly three thousand flags are on the Statehouse lawn this weekend, placed there by volunteers from two state agencies and a Columbus non-profit. Luke Stedke with the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board, which operates the Statehouse grounds, said the 90 volunteers placed 2,977 small flags on the lawn in a deliberate pattern that can be clearly seen from above.  “The design we have the Twin Towers, there’s a strip in the middle that represents the field in Pennsylvania, and then in the center of those two towers is a shape of the Pentagon. So the four attack sites are represented in that display,” said Stedke.

The display has been done every year since the first anniversary of the terror attacks in 2002. The flags will remain on the Statehouse lawn till Monday evening.
